Retreats to me bring back memories of my youth, and the church retreats we did in my teens. I don’t really remember what we did, and truthfully, I have zero interest in sharing sleeping arrangements with strangers at this point in my life, but I remember how I felt.
The break from the city, from normal routines, the community of people that I was extremely fond of, the support and structure that was provided that was completely different then daily life, I remember feeling connected, powerful, spiritual, and joyfully, gloriously happy.
As an adult there is personal growth that can only happen with time to reflect on what is working in your life, and taking the time to be grateful for all the good things that come your way, and how to multiply those amazing gifts. As well as time to reflect on what is not working, and thinking of actions, and strategies and changes that need to happen in order to eliminate or reduce those pain points.
In the fluster of daily life, too often when we make changes they are done in reaction to a painful or stressful event, but those changes may not be well thought out, or our own pattern of behaviour that contributed to the pain and stress to begin with is not acknowledged and as a result we end up in a very similar situation.
